Hip Surgery Continued

I am on the train from East Hampton back to New York City, end of summer 2014 for a this camper. I usually get sad at this change of seasons, but today I’m just full of joy and gratitude. I awoke early to a splendid, clear, bright day and headed right to the beach for a swim. Hardly a soul about on a weekday morning, but someone had thoughtfully tied three balloons to a trash can (the only fixed object in sight)—what a nice sendoff!

Then I taught my last yoga class and injury clinic (both at KamaDeva Yoga in East Hampton) with my “old” hip, which is doing its best up to the end. We will spend a few more days of quality time together (lots of unpacking to do in NYC) before my hip replacement surgery on Thursday. Then I suppose we need to have a birthday party (Christening?) for my new hip! God knows hospitals could use a little festivity 🙂

On Saturday, I watched a man kiteboarding up and down the surf and remembered this has always been something I’ve wanted to try. Hopefully, summer 2015! I know I should probably start with surfing, windsurfing, snowboarding, or paddleboarding first, but I’ve always been more of a zero-to-60 kind of girl! In the meantime, my friend Peter has graciously agreed to be my primary Wave Walker—he will hold my hand to keep my balance when I first get back in the ocean (counting the days already!).

I very much want to keep in touch with all of you during my surgery and recovery. Thanks so much to all of you who have already reached out to me personally. I was astounded at the responses to my hip-surgery emailing—so much love, so much support, so much informative experience shared. I have been diligently trying to answer each of your emails individually, but if I haven’t gotten to you yet amid all the planning, moving, and preparations, please forgive me. I hope to have email and text access throughout my hospital stay. All I know about that so far is:

Surgery: Thursday, September 11 (this week, yikes!), time TBA Surgeon: Dr. David Mayman Hospital: Hospital for Special Surgery, 535 East 70th Street, www.hss.edu Contacts: 2 friends are assisting me to/from hospital: My beloved assistant Sayaka Kubo (Say pronounced “Sigh”) say1977@gmail.com, 646-250-8613, and my devoted friend Janet Nolan, janetnolanart@gmail.com, 646- 678-0442. Hopefully between the two of them, they will be able to keep me out of trouble 🙂 Usual procedure is a 2- or 3-day stay, then home to recuperate.

I have not paid too much attention to the information about visitors because honestly, I know you are all busy, and who knows what shape I’ll be in? Potentially high as a kite (boarder) if they dope me up with painkillers. But seriously, being slightly immobilized may make it easier for me to connect with each of you than when I am out and about. So happy to hear from any and all.

As for post-op, I understand they get you up on your feet the day of surgery, walking around pretty soon after. My main limitation will be public transportation and driving (neither advised for a few weeks after surgery because a sudden jolt could dislocate the new hip). I expect to be at my NYC apartment (95 Christopher Street, apt. 4E, 10014, corner of Bleecker), should you be in the area with some time on your hands. Tea and laughter await you!
