Dear Students, Friends, and Colleagues,
Have you noticed that practicing yoga improves your life? Or are you wondering what this ancient practice has to do with your modern life?
For many students, yoga ends when they roll up their mats and leave the studio or finish a Zoom/video class. They promptly return to “real life,” forgetting the pearls of wisdom shared by their teachers and detaching from the physical experience of being in their bodies. I’ve seen hundreds of students have deep transformations while on yoga retreats, only to return home and revert to their old, limiting ways—as if yoga were something that only worked on exotic escapes from daily life.

Yoga means to “yoke” or join together; when we disconnect from ourselves, each other, and the world, we cast off the benefits of our yoga practice.

Yoga is meant to be lived! We thrive when we bring its practices and teachings into our ordinary lives. Years ago, as an independent yoga teacher who taught around the globe, I dubbed my business “Studio Without Walls.” I’m reviving that phrase to inspire each of you to carry your yoga out into the world. We “householder yogis” (as opposed to swamis—monks and nuns, or “renunciates” who live in ashrams) are tasked with staying connected to the Source while navigating life’s tumult.

But how do we do so?
Over the next few months, I will offer specific tips and tricks (“life hacks”) that enable you to practice yoga in your life, where it really matters! The first, Breathe!, is below. Stay tuned, more to come!

Hopefully, you are already breathing!:) But yoga asks us to breathe well: deeply, slowly, and mindfully.
You know the old advice to take 10 deep breaths before you react to something or someone? Well, folk wisdom, modern science, and yoga agree!
When you slow down the breath, your nervous system stabilizes, which makes your mind clear, which allows your heart to open.
You shift from fight-or-flight mode to sane response mode, because you are no longer driven by anger or fear. Rather than scared and defensive, you feel wise and compassionate—the two highest virtues in any Eastern spirituality. Give it a try, right now! And let me know how it changes everything.
